What the course usually involves▼
Courmayeur sits on the sunny side of Mont Blanc with the Skyway on one flank and some of the best tree skiing in the Alps on the other. It is quieter than Chamonix, and it holds snow in places the crowds never reach.
The Skyway takes you to Punta Helbronner at 3,466 m, onto glacier terrain looking straight across at the Grandes Jorasses. These are high, committing descents where a harness goes on and the guide carries a rope — and they stay cold and untracked long after the resort has gone over.
Lower down, Val Vény gives sheltered tree skiing that stays good when the light goes flat and everything above the treeline becomes unskiable. It is the reason people book Courmayeur on a bad forecast. The Youla and Cresta d'Arp sectors above Dolonne run long descents toward the valley floor and come alive in both winter powder and spring corn, if you time the morning right.
The Italian side gets storms from the south while Chamonix gets them from the north-west, so the two sides rarely have the same conditions. Book several days and a guide can follow whichever side delivered — through the tunnel to Chamonix in twenty minutes, or out to La Thuile and Pila.

The Skyway Monte Bianco reaches Punta Helbronner at 3,466 m, opening glaciated high-alpine terrain on the Géant and Toula glaciers — the Italian counterpart to the Vallée Blanche, and a rope-and-harness environment.
The resort lifts serve Val Vény on the Mont Blanc side, known for sheltered tree skiing that stays usable in flat light and storm, and the Youla and Cresta d'Arp sectors above Dolonne, which give long descents toward the valley and come into their own as spring corn.
La Thuile, Pila and the Val Ferret are within easy reach for a change of aspect, and Chamonix is twenty minutes through the tunnel.
The season runs December to April. Val Vény holds early-season snow well in the trees, and the Skyway terrain extends the season at the top end.
