Intro to Mountain Navigation - map & compass

An introduction course to mountain navigation. Aimed for complete beginners to people who want a refresher in navigation in the mountains. Learn map-reading and simple navigation techniques, recognition of natural features, distance measurement and timing of walks, the mountain environment & access. Mountain hazards are also covered, as is personal equipment such as correct clothing and emergency equipment. We will also look at use of compasses. These skill are for all sports in the mountains, whether it’s hill walking, ski touring, mountaineering or off road biking. When in the mountains you should be able to know where you are, where you want to get to, how to get there and how to get back!

We meet at the bottom of Prarion gondola station in Les Houches at 09:00. We will go up the gondala together. We will finish at 15:00 at the top station. There will be plenty of hiking involved, but not a very big or hard journey. The goal is to learn.
