Your first day on ice. This is a full introduction to ice climbing on easy single-pitch routes in Arolla, in a small group with an IFMGA guide. You will learn how to use ice axes and crampons, move efficiently on ice and belay safely, and by the end of the day you will be climbing steeper ice than you thought possible. Why ice climbing in Arolla: Arolla has reliable frozen waterfalls in a quiet, high alpine setting, with short approaches and routes of different angles close together. That makes it an ideal place to start: we can begin on gentle ice and step up progressively as you gain confidence. Who it's for: Complete beginners to ice climbing. No experience needed. Some sport climbing experience helps but is not required. You should be comfortable with a short winter walk-in of 15 to 30 minutes and a full day outside in cold conditions. Conditions: Ice climbing depends on ice conditions. The season usually runs from December to February. If ice conditions are poor, the guide will move the day to a nearby area with better ice or propose another date.
