The Spaghetti Tour is a five-day glacier traverse of the Monte Rosa massif, linking Italian mountain huts and up to eleven 4,000 m summits. It usually starts from Zermatt over the Breithorn and finishes at the Capanna Margherita at 4,554 m, the highest hut in Europe.
What the course usually involves▼
The Spaghetti Tour links more 4,000 m summits in a week than anywhere else in the Alps — five days, Italian huts, and up to eleven peaks depending on conditions and how the group moves.
The start. Most versions begin from Zermatt, with the lift to 3,883 m and a crossing of the Breithorn. You are on a 4,000 m summit within two hours of the valley, then descend into Italy for the first hut night.
The middle days. Glacier summits linked in sequence — Pollux, Castor, the Naso del Lyskamm.
The high point. One day links several summits in sequence and finishes at the Capanna Margherita at 4,554 m. Sleeping in the highest building in Europe is the tour's great achievement!
What you work on: Sustained glacier travel over consecutive days, rope team movement, crampon work on firm morning and softening afternoon snow, and managing effort and hydration above 4,000 m.

Location context▼
The tour traverses the Monte Rosa massif on the Swiss–Italian border, the largest concentration of 4,000 m peaks in the Alps. Most versions start from Zermatt via the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise lift at 3,883 m, crossing the Breithorn into Italy.
Huts along the way include the Rifugio Guide d'Ayas, the Rifugio Gnifetti, the Rifugio Mantova and the Capanna Regina Margherita at 4,554 m on the summit of the Signalkuppe — the highest building in Europe, built in 1893 and still functioning as both hut and research station.
Summits available include the Breithorn, Pollux, Castor, the Naso del Lyskamm, Balmenhorn, Piramide Vincent, Corno Nero, Ludwigshöhe, Parrotspitze, Signalkuppe and Zumsteinspitze. Which are climbed depends on conditions.
The season runs June to September. Early season means better snow bridges but colder nights at Margherita; late season brings more open crevasses and slower route-finding.

On the Spaghetti Tour, the Capanna Margherita at 4,554 metres it is the highest building in Europe. For most people, the night isn't often remembered for how good the sleep is... but more for the amazing views and experience. Altitude is a big factor here.
Can I do a shorter version?▼
Yes. Three and four-day Spaghetti Tour versions cover part of the traverse, and the tour can run from either the Swiss or the Italian side. Tell a guide your dates and fitness and they will propose something that fits.
When is the best time of year?▼
The Spaghetti Tour is best done late June to early September. Earlier gives firmer snow bridges but colder nights at Margherita. September has more open crevasses and slower route-finding but generally the most settled weather.
