Climb the Eiger with a Guide
The Mittellegi Ridge is the classic route to the Eiger's 3,967 m summit, approached from the Jungfraujoch and climbed from the Mittellegi hut. The ridge is narrow, sustained and exposed for its full length, with fixed ropes on the steepest steps. Guides climb it one to one.
What the course usually involves▼
The Mittellegi Ridge is the classic line on the Eiger, climbed one to one for the same reason as the Matterhorn: sustained exposed terrain!
The approach is unlike any other alpine route. From Grindelwald the Jungfrau railway climbs inside the mountain to the Eismeer station, and you exit onto the glacier through a door in the rock. The traverse to the Mittellegi hut takes three to four hours, with fixed ropes and ladders on the climb to the hut itself.
The hut is at 3,355 m on the ridge, a small modern building in a spectacular position. It sleeps very few people, which limits traffic and means bookings are made far in advance.
The ridge is narrow and exposed from the beginning. You move together on a short rope for most of it. Summitting is an unforgettable experience - the Eiger is one of the most iconic mountains in the Alps!

Location context▼
The Eiger stands at 3,967 m above Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland, its north face among the most famous in mountaineering. The Mittellegi Ridge runs up the northeast side and is the classic route to the summit.
Access is via the Jungfrau railway, which tunnels through the Eiger itself. Climbers exit at the Eismeer station onto the glacier and traverse the Challifirn for three to four hours to the Mittellegi hut at 3,355 m.
The same railway and the Jungfraujoch serve the Mönch, the Jungfrau and the Grosses Fiescherhorn, and the Wetterhorn and Schreckhorn sit above Grindelwald itself — so the area holds plenty of alternatives when the Eiger is not in condition.
The season runs July to September, in settled weather with dry rock.

How hard is the Mittellegi Ridge?▼
The Eiger Mittellegi Ridge is graded around AD to D depending on conditions, with three fixed-rope steps. The ridge is narrow, continuously exposed, and committing, with retreat difficult once you are on the route. This is reserved for advanced and ambitious climbers!
What experience do I need?▼
The Eiger is for experienced alpinists only. You need to move confidently and quickly on exposed rock and mixed ground, be fully acclimatised and in good condition. Guides will assess this before accepting a booking.
How much does a guided Eiger climb cost?▼
A guided Eiger ascent costs from around CHF 1,600 per person, reflecting the one-to-one ratio. Hut half-board for you and the guide, and the Jungfrau railway tickets, are usually additional. Request a guide for a full quote.
Why is it one guide to one client?▼
The Eiger's Mittellegi Ridge is climbed largely moving together on a short rope over narrow, exposed terrain with limited protection. A guide cannot safeguard two people on that ground, so the ratio is not negotiable.

The Eiger is best climbed July to September, in settled weather with dry rock. Due to conditions, a guided programme with spare days is substantially more likely to result in a summit.
